Green Business Opportunities in Bangladesh

Green trade is critical for countries in Asia to scale up climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts in order to maintain export competitiveness and diversify export baskets in the transition to a low-carbon economy. This seminar has two objectives: (i) to present the key results of analytical work on trade in environmental goods and services (EGS) carried out as part of the Bangladesh and India Country Economic Memoranda and a regional study on deepening linkages between South Asia and Southeast Asia; and (ii) to stimulate a discussion on the important role that green trade can play in terms of reducing the damaging impacts on the environment and become an opportunity for economic growth.

Greening traditional export sectors such as ready-made garments will be critical for countries such as Bangladesh to ensure worker health and maintain productivity. Greener trade can contribute to the production and export of environmental goods through regional value chains, to increased exports of environmentally friendly goods with lower carbon footprints, and to improved access to environmental technologies. To this end, reducing trade barriers to environmental goods and services (technologies) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce greener products is key to all countries’ major export industries and foreign exchange earnings.
